A Useful tip for laddered stockings

Have you ever wondered what to do with those old stockings once they are laddered and unwearable again? Well, it may surprise you to learn there are any number of uses that old women's stockings can be put to.

If you have anything to be polished amd shined within an inch of it's lacquer, then all you need to do is to cut off one leg of a pair of pantyhose, put the item inside the cut off stocking leg and roll it back and forth, up and down in the stocking leg. If it is slightly rounded it does roll better and it's obviously better if there are no sharp edges to catch on the find stocking material.

If you have a lawn bowler in the house then this is an excellent way to shine and polish those heavy bowls to get a winners shine!

Beware Black Stockings and White Skirts

I was recently reminded of something my Mother shared with me when I was learning how to wear women's stockings like a lady.

"Black stockings if worn with a white skirt should always have a petticoat between"

Petticoats are another item of women's clothing that seems to be little used today but there are still some times that they really should be worn. Filmy white skirts and a black top look smart and well dressed. When completed with a pair of black stockings and black high heeled shoes they really look smart and compliment most women's figures beautifully.

When dressing in a bedroom that is not well lit and the mirror can't show you what others will see once you are out on the street and especially in full daylight. An attractive young lady was walking towards me in the street the other day and she was wearing the above. The problem was she wasn't wearing a petticoat underneath her light white skirt and her black stockings were clearly visible and they were bunched at her waist which looked awful. She was wearing the wrong sized stocking and it showed for the entire world to see. If she had been going for a job interview she spoilt the whole otherwise well-thought out attire by something so drastic and yet so simple not to do.

I felt for her because I'm sure she had no idea of the fashion taboo she was committing. I just wish everyone had been as lucky as me and had such a good stockings teacher as my Mother was for me.

Women's Stockings and Hot Humid Days Don't go Together

There's absolutely no doubt about it but it is cruel to want women to wear nylon stockings in the summer. Here in Queensland Australia the days are hot around 30degrees Celsius every day which is nice but you really have to dress accordingly or you could die from heat exhaustion. No joke!

Nylon is a man made material from the petrochemical industry and nylon doesn't 'breathe'. It tends to cling very tightly to a woman's legs and the crutch even with a cotton gusset becomes over-heated so yeast infections are rampant due the hot and humid summer days. This is a very uncomfortable condition for women. But luckily most Queensland women have adapted a very common sense approach to dealing with this problem.

Unless you absolutely, positively, "can't-get-out-of-it-except-by-dying" have to wear stockings during the day time, you simply make sure you have a nice pedicure for your toe-nails and an attractive loosely fitting dressy outfit and go off to work. Coolness and comfort are the requirements of living well in a tropical environment.

However, if you are an office worker sitting at a desk all day in air-conditioning you need to always make sure you have a cardigan handy in case you start to get too cool because someone coming in from outside has turned the thermostat on the air-conditioning down too low.

In an office environment this is quite a common happening and if you are too scantily clad you can get ill. As strange as it may sound to anyone who has never lived in the tropics, I have caught pneumonia from just such a scenario. I once used to do a lot of field and lab work with wild animals and I had to come into the library for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea if I was working around the laboratory. My clothes would be wringing wet and sitting in a super cool environment that the books needed to discourage the growth of mould, I became quite ill. So, just to be on the safe side just make sure you have a cardigan or jumper handy to put on.

If you live in the tropics you really don't need to wear stockings unless you go out somewhere special at night.

Nylon Stockings and Summer heat

Summer is fast approaching here in Queensland Australia and the heat during the day is increasing. I was in Brisbane this week and I noticed many of the younger office girls are no longer wearing jeans but they have started wearing skirts and blouses and stockings. So the morning must be a bit chilly still becuase as soon as the days start to get really hot, those stockings will no longer be necessary to wear except when dressing up to go out again at night.

This is both good and bad because wearing stockings does make a woman feel kinda special.....

Oh well....there's literally no point in sweating over it....and stockings can become very sticky and clingy and awfully uncomfortable on a really hot day!

Nylon Stockings and Static Electricity

Have you ever noticed an increase in static electricity when you wear nylon stockings on a windy day?

Static electricity and nylon stockings can shock you when you get out of a car, when you touch a tap or anything metal. Even the kitchen sink can give you a shock. These shocks can make you jump!

The weather doesn't even have to be windy sometimes because some people have dry skin and the constant contact with the nylon builds up electricty in your body that you feel whenever you touch anything metalic.

The cure for this is hand lotion or body lotion rubbed over your body before putting on your nylon stockings.

Even though the material in nylon stockings is actually spandex, it originates from nylon. We still call them "nylons" because that is what we were introduced to them as being called.

Static electricity caused by rubbing friction with the nylon though is no joke. It actually hurts a bit. Apart from that, when you get out of a car and touch the metal door handle the sudden shock brings you down to earth immediately.

If you have never had this problem you will not be aware of how uncomfortable it actually is but if you have had the problem, invest in a good moisturising lotion and use it liberally. It really does help.

Long Legs in Stockings

Long legs and well fitting stockings can pose a problem for many women. Anyone who has never worn a pair of uncomfortable stockings probably hasn’t thought about leg size. Legs come in all shapes and sizes but if you are just a little bit one way or another outside ‘the norm’ then you have to take extra care when buying a pair of stockings.

Short skinny legs can lead to stockings sagging around the knees or bunching around the ankles and this really looks unattractive. Long skinny legs can end up with the wearer being ‘hobbled’ around the inside thigh area. This is turn tends to split the stockings at the crutch area and can lead to extra chaffing of the inner thigh which, quite frankly, hurts. It’s actually a friction burn and like all burns, needs special attention.

Women with long legs buying stockings need to take extra care when buying. Just because the pair of stockings is discounted at the supermarket doesn’t necessarily make them a good buy for you. Do you always check the sizes chart available wherever stockings are sold? If not, I suggest that you do so before buying any pair of stockings but especially if the stockings are not a known brand to you.

Some stockings made in some countries are only made and modelled on the sizes of the local women and as we all know unfortunately, western women are getting larger every year so what’s considered ‘large’ in some countries will only really be a ‘medium’ size in a western country.

Long legs and stockings usually need the extra large size not because of the weight factor but because of the stretch factor built in to these sizes. It is so much easier today with the type of spandex used in stockings as against when there were only nylon stockings available. The spandex used today in most brands of stockings is very fine and silky yet far more durable than nylon ever was or had the capability of being.

Silk stockings are usually more expensive than the spandex material commonly used but if you have long legs and need a special pair of stockings for a special occasion, then it’s worth spending the money and taking the time to visit a good lingerie store and being properly fitted with your right size. And you may get a very pleasant surprise to learn that the prices are more competitive than you originally thought.

Being fitted by a hosiery specialist at a lingerie store means the comfort level for women with long legs in stockings is immeasurable.
Hosiery for every occasion!
