Women's Stockings and High Heels

In the winter time it's very tempting to wear the thickest pair of stockings in your lingerie drawer but if you are planning on wearing a pair of high heeled shoes, this may not be the best look overall. High heels on a woman are very attractive and so they attract people's eyes to your legs and seeing a thick pair of school-girl type tights is unattractive.

High heeled shoes should be worn with the finest stocking fabric. "The more sheer the stocking, the more cheer the girl" was one of my Grandmothers favourite sayings but she lived back in the day's when guys were allowed to wolf-whistle a girl.

If your high heeled shoes are backless, that is they attach either with a slim strap around the top part of the heel, then you need a pair of stockings that doesn't show the heel. Some really well made stockings have a thicker fabric around the heel for comfort and durability but if you are wearing the grocery-store version, some will have a thicker heel and others won't. Choose a pair of suitable stockings to wear with backless high heeled shoes simply because it is more flattering to the rest of your leg.

The other possible problem you may or may not be aware of is how well you appear to manage your high heeled shoes. It looks uncomfortable, dangerous and clumsy to be tottering around in shoes that have too high a heel. Not only does it make you look as if you are balancing on stilts rather than sashaying down the street, it is actually very dangerous to your long term health. That is, women who wear too high a heeled shoe too often, will end up suffering severe back problems when they get older.

And these days guys aren't allowed to wolf-whistle you so you may as well be comfortable instead.

A Useful tip for laddered stockings

Have you ever wondered what to do with those old stockings once they are laddered and unwearable again? Well, it may surprise you to learn there are any number of uses that old women's stockings can be put to.

If you have anything to be polished amd shined within an inch of it's lacquer, then all you need to do is to cut off one leg of a pair of pantyhose, put the item inside the cut off stocking leg and roll it back and forth, up and down in the stocking leg. If it is slightly rounded it does roll better and it's obviously better if there are no sharp edges to catch on the find stocking material.

If you have a lawn bowler in the house then this is an excellent way to shine and polish those heavy bowls to get a winners shine!

Beware Black Stockings and White Skirts

 I was recently reminded of something my Mother shared with me when I was learning how to wear women's stockings like a lady.

"Black stockings if worn with a white skirt should always have a petticoat between"

Petticoats are another item of women's clothing that seems to be little used today but there are still some times that they really should be worn. Filmy white skirts and a black top look smart and well dressed. When completed with a pair of black stockings and black high heeled shoes they really look smart and compliment most women's figures beautifully.

When dressing in a bedroom that is not well lit and the mirror can't show you what others will see once you are out on the street and especially in full daylight. An attractive young lady was walking towards me in the street the other day and she was wearing the above. The problem was she wasn't wearing a petticoat underneath her light white skirt and her black stockings were clearly visible and they were bunched at her waist which looked awful. She was wearing the wrong sized stocking and it showed for the entire world to see. If she had been going for a job interview she spoilt the whole otherwise well-thought out attire by something so drastic and yet so simple not to do.

I felt for her because I'm sure she had no idea of the fashion taboo she was committing. I just wish everyone had been as lucky as me and had such a good stockings teacher as my Mother was for me.

Women's Stockings and Hot Humid Days Don't go Together

There's absolutely no doubt about it but it is cruel to want women to wear nylon stockings in the summer. Here in Queensland Australia the days are hot around 30degrees Celsius every day which is nice but you really have to dress accordingly or you could die from heat exhaustion. No joke!

Nylon is a man made material from the petrochemical industry and nylon doesn't 'breathe'. It tends to cling very tightly to a woman's legs and the crutch even with a cotton gusset becomes over-heated so yeast infections are rampant due the hot and humid summer days. This is a very uncomfortable condition for women. But luckily most Queensland women have adapted a very common sense approach to dealing with this problem.

Unless you absolutely, positively, "can't-get-out-of-it-except-by-dying" have to wear stockings during the day time, you simply make sure you have a nice pedicure for your toe-nails and an attractive loosely fitting dressy outfit and go off to work. Coolness and comfort are the requirements of living well in a tropical environment.

However, if you are an office worker sitting at a desk all day in air-conditioning you need to always make sure you have a cardigan handy in case you start to get too cool because someone coming in from outside has turned the thermostat on the air-conditioning down too low.

In an office environment this is quite a common happening and if you are too scantily clad you can get ill. As strange as it may sound to anyone who has never lived in the tropics, I have caught pneumonia from just such a scenario. I once used to do a lot of field and lab work with wild animals and I had to come into the library for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea if I was working around the laboratory. My clothes would be wringing wet and sitting in a super cool environment that the books needed to discourage the growth of mould, I became quite ill. So, just to be on the safe side just make sure you have a cardigan or jumper handy to put on.

If you live in the tropics you really don't need to wear stockings unless you go out somewhere special at night.

Women's Stockings and Bleach Don't Mix

Women's stockings and bleach really don't mix. I have a friend who carelessly put her stockings into a laundry stocking bag to put them through a gentle cycle in her washing machine along with some tea towels. She always puts a capful of bleach through with her tea-towels but she doesn't usually put her stockings through with them at the same time. She was trying to do too much in too big a hurry and talk to me at the same time.

The cycle was on warm so that was something but the stockings were an absolute write off! And what really hurt was they were her most comfortable pair and she wanted to wear them the next day for a job interview.

The laundry stocking bag was the right way to go IF you have to wash them in a washing machine (not the best idea, by the way) but it's also not healthy to wash underwear with items that come in contact with eating utensils or food.

Anyway, stockings when they get bleached (well, this pair anyway) looked absolutely anaemic and the bleach weakened the thread so that they lost their strength so even if they hadn't changed colour, she may have worn them only to lose them at a very inopportune time.

I mean how embarrassing would that have been? Standing up at the end of the job interview, preparing to shake hands 'goodbye' only to find yourself hobbled like a horse with your stockings around your ankles!

Let's just say she would probably have made an impression and been one candidate the interview panel would never forget!

Whoops! Never trust Elastic

Have you ever been in a precarious situation and had a vital piece of equipment fail? I have always worked with men in a predominately male environment so to have the elastic give way in my stupide thigh high stockings was more than a little embarrassing. We were miles away from the nearest shopping centre (mall) so the only thing I could do was remove them and hope no one noticed. I think I got away with it ~ either that or they were all too nice a gentlemen to mention it.

So, the moral of this story is always buy good quality stockings.
