If you are an anxious lover and you have started thinking about what to get your 'significant other' this Christmas then you won't go far wrong with a pair of special stockings. These special stockings can be whatever suits you best; fishnet, sheer, patterned, silky thigh highs or whatever you choose. But I do strongly recommend you check out her proper size.
How to do this without her knowing? Good question and you may need to use some "Dick Tracey" (pun intended) tactics here. It's amazing really how women know when someone has been into their lingerie drawer so you will have to be very discreet. Before you touch anything in her drawer after opening it, take a good look at how everything is set out. Most women know to within an inch where a certain pair of stockings lives and if you don't put them back exactly right you will get a question or comment about "someone's been into my drawer!" and we don't want that, now do we?
Just be sure to put everything back exactly as you found it after checking what sizes and brands are on the spare stocking package labels. Most stockings don't have sizes on the stockings themselves so you will need to read the new packages. If there are no new packages of stockings in there then you will need to invent an excuse to get her downtown and into a mall without raising her suspicions.
Once you are in the shopping centre or mall together, see if you can entice her into a lingerie shop or super department store and past the lingerie section. I'm sure while you are in there and looking around, see if you can discretely get her sizing from her while you pretend (or honestly) admire something and say that you think that would look nice on her. Women love these types of comments!
That way you may also get her dress sizing and this will be a big help to most shop assistants working in a lingerie shop because they will then know what her stocking size is most likely to be with a 96% accuracy. Depending on the style of stocking you end up buying this close a fit will be pretty well comfortable for her to wear.
Now that we have the stocking sizeing sorted out why stick at buying only one pair? Why not buy her a pair for a few occasions and when she wears them she will be able to remember when she wore certain others. Memories are precious and better when shared.

Women's Stockings and High Heels
In the winter time it's very tempting to wear the thickest pair of stockings in your lingerie drawer but if you are planning on wearing a pair of high heeled shoes, this may not be the best look overall. High heels on a woman are very attractive and so they attract people's eyes to your legs and seeing a thick pair of school-girl type tights is unattractive.
High heeled shoes should be worn with the finest stocking fabric. "The more sheer the stocking, the more cheer the girl" was one of my Grandmothers favourite sayings but she lived back in the day's when guys were allowed to wolf-whistle a girl.
If your high heeled shoes are backless, that is they attach either with a slim strap around the top part of the heel, then you need a pair of stockings that doesn't show the heel. Some really well made stockings have a thicker fabric around the heel for comfort and durability but if you are wearing the grocery-store version, some will have a thicker heel and others won't. Choose a pair of suitable stockings to wear with backless high heeled shoes simply because it is more flattering to the rest of your leg.
The other possible problem you may or may not be aware of is how well you appear to manage your high heeled shoes. It looks uncomfortable, dangerous and clumsy to be tottering around in shoes that have too high a heel. Not only does it make you look as if you are balancing on stilts rather than sashaying down the street, it is actually very dangerous to your long term health. That is, women who wear too high a heeled shoe too often, will end up suffering severe back problems when they get older.
And these days guys aren't allowed to wolf-whistle you so you may as well be comfortable instead.

Nylon Stocking Toes
Have you ever thought about why most 'average cost' women's stockings have that double thickness around the toe section of the foot?
Yes, it does add comfort to toes particularly if the shoes are a bit too tight but there is a more important reason. And that's because many women do not give themselves a pedicure often enough to keep their toenails trimmed and cared for!
On the other side of the coin (or foot) I have seen some women's toenails that a falcon or hawk would carry with pride. Talk about either end of the scales. But basically, that double layer of fabric around the toes is to stop toenails from making a hole in your stockings.
Once a hole has formed at the toes of a pair of stockings you virtually have at most one more wearing before having to throw them out. You can only get that wearing out of them though if you are prepared to put up with a bit of discomfort because your toes get tangled in the hole and it hurts.
Not much ruins a pair of stockings faster than unkempt toenails. They either snag the stocking when putting them on or the toenail cuts through the fine fabric like a knife. Apart from the discomfort of the long toenails in shoes, even open toed sandals, long toenails become very painful when worn enclosed in shoes all day.
Have you also noticed the other thing about that double fabric around the toes? Sometimes if you buy a cheap pair of stockings the manufacturer has put a seam in there and after a day's wearing, this seam has cut into toes quite fiercely and one gets very footsore by the end of the day particularly if you have had to be on your feet all day.
I believe we should punish such cruel manufacturers by (a) not buying any more of their cheap and nasty product and (b) we should make him/her wear a pair of their own stockings all day.
I'm sure you've heard the story about "walking a mile in the other person's shoes…"

Mature Women in Stockings Today
Most of the older women in our society today remember the days when they first had to wear stockings. Most of them probably started out with a suspender belt and 'graduated' to wearing a corset or girdle. The stockings fabric used then was either silk or cotton depending on their financial circumstances and held up by suspenders attached to the suspender belt, corsets or later a girdle.
The difference between a corset and a girdle is a corset was usually made with stays made from whalebone sewn between pieces of the fabric and laced up at the back to hold everything in place where a girdle was made from an elasticised fabric to surround and 'hold in' a woman's stomach and bottom. The girdle was more comfortable to wear but still had and has certain discomforts. Girdles are still worn today by many mature women simply because they feel very uncomfortable and undressed without it. As the saying goes "old habits die hard".
Many mature women wearing stockings today do so because they feel very undressed without them if they are wearing a skirt or dress. No doubt they had probably been severely chastised at some point in their lives for wearing 'bare legs'.
The stockings worn by mature women in years gone by had other uses too apart from the social acceptability derived from being 'properly' dressed.
The shoes of the day were usually made from leather and the leather was not as soft and pliable as it is today. The process of leather tanning back then was more for longevity rather than comfort to the wearer. It would have been most uncomfortable to have worn a pair of those shoes without socks or stockings to protect against the rough rubbing of the shoe on the foot. The blisters caused by this friction burning would have hurt and would certainly be well remembered by our mature women wearing stockings today.
The other thing to note is today we all shower or bath every day but back then a bath once a week was what most of them had available to them. Water was not so readily available in most of the homes and often had to be carried in from a water tank outside. Keeping feet clean was and still is today, another reason our mature women wear stockings.

Women who wear nylon stockings, or for that matter, any pantyhose at all need to keep their toenails short and well pedicured.
Long sharp toe nails do not go well with stockings.
Neither do raggedy, broken or chipped toe nails because they ladder the stockings when you are putting them on or if you manage to get them on without catching and snagging the fine fabric then when you start wearing your shoes, the toenails will cut holes in the toes of your stockings. And that will be the end of those stockings.
Why do that unless you want to waste your money which, of course, you are quite entitled to do, but women who wear nylon or spandex stockings really need to keep their toenails short and well pedicured.
It is very inexpensive to have a pedicure done and it really does make toenails look fabulous!
Besides, it makes one feel terribly decadent and pampered to have someone massage your feet for you and I have to admit, it is great having some who can cut my toenails straight. Somehow, they always seem to manage to do a better job than I ever can no matter how careful I am.
And then when someone takes your stockings off for you, you will have very pretty feet without the stockings.
And folks, that makes you sexy!
